Forging a Future Together

A message from Kazuhiro Suzuki, Japanese Ambassador to Australia

Many years of complementary relations have formed a close economic partnership between Japan and Australia underpinned by Australia’s exports of vital energy and natural resources to Japan, and Japan’s exports of industrial goods to Australia along with investment in key sectors such as infrastructure.

A Major target of the Australian Government in the Future Made in Australia policy is to make Australia a renewable energy superpower towards net-zero, while bearing in mind the aim to advance domestic manufacturing. Japan is anticipating further cooperation with Australia towards realising global Net Zero through efforts of transition. This topic was discussed by many business leaders from both countries at the Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference held in Nagoya during October last year. This year’s conference will be held in Perth, Western Australia, a city which has been attracting attention in the field of Japan-Australia relations, not only for its natural resources and energy, but also in critical minerals and the defence industry. I expect to see deepening ties between the two countries in this important city facing the Indian Ocean.

These relations have laid the foundation of our Special Strategic Partnership, through which we see increasing cooperation in the security and defence sectors. In addition, I believe the “Mogami” class frigate, which has been nominated as one of the candidates for the general-purpose frigate of the Royal Australian Navy, will have strategic ramification for making the Japan-Australia bilateral relationship even stronger and closer, should it be selected.

As Ambassador of Japan to Australia, I am committed to ensuring that Japan-Australia partnership continues to deepen throughout this year at various levels from local communities, culture and academia, business and industries, and municipal and intergovernmental.

In April the long-awaited Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will open its doors. Australia has also shown great enthusiasm in preparation for the event. I wholeheartedly encourage you to visit the Expo, starting with the Australia Pavilion, so that it may offer opportunity to expand economic and business partnership between Japan and Australia, and beyond.

As Ambassador of Japan to Australia, I am committed to ensuring that Japan-Australia partnership continues to deepen throughout this year at various levels from local communities, culture and academia, business and industries, and municipal and intergovernmental.
