Modern Japonisme

The term Japonisme emerged to characterize the profound Western interest in Japanese art and culture during the 19th century, following the reopening of Japanese ports to Western trade in 1854 after more than two centuries of closure.

Today Japan is the world’s third largest economy and it continues to inspire art and culture around the world. In the Philippines, the influence of the Japanese aesthetic on design was evident in this year’s winners.

The interiors and landscape of Best Condo Architectural Design winner, The Grand Midori Ortigas by Federal Land, Inc., take inspiration from the Japanese concepts of wabi-sabi and miyabi that focus on discovering beauty in imperfection and the expression of elegance and refinement. Renowned Japanese architectural firm, Tange Associates was especially tapped as a design consultant for the project to ensure an infusion of Japanese aesthetics, technology and innovation in its architecture.

Mitsukoshi BGC by Sunshine Fort North Bonifacio Realty Development Corporation was awarded the Best Retail Interior Design title for its Japanese-inspired interiors that embrace the concept of omotenashi — Japanese hospitality. The design reflects Japanese elements such as the use of natural materials like stone, wood, and metals. The interior features a central wooden trellis called the ‘Joining Hands,’ symbolizing the partnership between the Philippines and Japan. The facade design combines local environmental harmony with Japanese architectural elements, with the aluminum hemp leaf pattern symbolizing Mitsukoshi’s identity, designed by Asao Tokolo, the same artist behind the 2020 Tokyo Olympic emblem.

According to the judges, “The interiors are also inspired by Japan with clean lines combined with traditional designs including an internal pagoda roof and wooden, tatami-style slats. Spaces are designed to flow and create a Zen-like retail experience.”

Another award-winning property which takes inspiration from Japanese design aesthetics is the Tokyo by Antel Land, which clinched the Best Housing Architectural Design title, encourages the concept of zen in a modern setting.

DGT City Center by Cebu Landmasters, winner of the Best Retail Architectural Design award, is a modern Filipino landmark located in Davao Global Township. The lifestyle center blends tropical and locally-themed architecture with global retail experiences. Its design draws inspiration from Davao’s rich cultural heritage, featuring a façade adorned with patterns from local tribes and an undulating roof reminiscent of the iconic vinta sailboat from the south. The architecture respects the natural topography, resulting in harmonious terraced structures. Key design elements include a skylight canopy with local Mindanaoan patterns, mangrove-inspired columns, and interconnected open-air bridges symbolizing the unity of Mindanao tribes.
