During our exploration of Niseko’s vibrant dining scene at its peak season, thanks to Kristian Lund, co-founder and editor of Powderlife, we had the pleasure of experiencing some of Hirafu’s finest offerings. Here’s a glimpse into the places we tried, along with others he suggested, for your next visit.
Places We Explored
Izakaya Kougetsu
Step into Izakaya Kougetsu and immerse yourself in a delightful culinary journey. Known for its exceptional sashimi and regional dishes, this family-run establishment offers a warm welcome and a chance to savor Hokkaido delicacies. Don’t miss the crispy grilled mackerel, giant creamy oysters, juicy dumplings, and the overflowing vegetable hotpots. Pair your meal with a selection of premium sake for an unforgettable dining experience.
Green Farm Deli Café
A favorite for breakfast and lunch, Green Farm Deli Café offers food from farm to fork. Using the best Hokkaido produce, this café serves up fresh, wholesome meals and boasts in-house roasted coffee, ensuring the freshest brew in town. With high-speed Wi-Fi and charging points, it’s also a perfect spot for digital nomads.
Aya Kitchen
This place we discovered on our own at the base of one of Niseko Grand Hirafu’s most popular ski lifts. AYA Niseko offers a convenient and delicious dining option. Highlights include the Kitakata clear broth and the AYA Seafood Tempura Rice Bowl. This no-frills eatery focuses on delivering yummy meals that satisfy.
Bar Gyu+
Bar Gyu+ is a renowned spot in Niseko, famous for its unique and vibrant atmosphere. Often referred to as the “Fridge Door Bar” due to its distinctive vintage Coca-Cola vending machine entrance, it stands out as one of Hirafu’s most popular drinking venues. The bar is celebrated for its innovative cocktails and extensive whiskey selection, offering a cozy yet lively environment that attracts both locals and visitors. The ambiance is enhanced by eclectic music, creating a distinctive vibe that adds to its charm.
Freddies Bar
We wanted to grab some drinks after dinner and found ourselves at Freddie’s Bar. This American-style clubhouse is ideal for après-ski relaxation. Enjoy smokehouse dining, cocktails, and craft beers. By 10pm, Freddies Bar transforms into a lively saloon, complete with tabletop dancing, making it a wild and fun place to spend your night.
Food Trucks in Niseko
Elvis, King of Kebab
Elvis, originally from Wales, lived in Tokyo for 13 years, honing his skills making kebabs in a friend’s shop. He visited Niseko and ended up opening his own kebab business. Elvis spends his mornings preparing his special kebab sauces and fresh chicken. You can choose from a variety of dishes including potato kebabs, vegetarian kebabs, kebab curries with rice, chicken kebabs, wraps, and more.
Elvis is at his stall from 3pm to midnight every day, located between SkiJapan.com and New White Bear.
Other Food Truck Delights
Close to Elvis, you’ll find a fantastic Gyudon stall and another stall offering fresh buttered Hokkaido scallops and warm sake, perfect for a quick and delicious bite during your adventures in Niseko.
