Since launching its European liner service in 1896, NYK has served trade between Europe and Japan through successive industrial changes. Its German operation now helps automotive customers manage vehicle movements across sea and land, with electrification, new manufacturing locations and geopolitical impacts requiring timely and innovative logistics solutions.

“NYK’s strength lies in evolving with customers as industries and supply chains change, firmly guided by our global mission: ‘Bringing Value to Life,’” said Danny Goldfinch, Germany country head of NYK Line (Deutschland) GmbH. Long-standing relationships, reliability, safety and continuous improvement guide its automotive and project cargo services.
Germany remains a strategic pillar of the group’s wider European network. Goldfinch’s role brings NYK Group companies in Germany into closer coordination on services and customer relationships, within governance and compliance requirements. “It allows decisions to be made closer to the customer while drawing on NYK’s global scale and local expertise, supporting the ‘One Europe – One NYK’ approach,” he said.
Automotive services combine ocean transport, inland logistics, shipment visibility and specialist handling. “NYK helps customers build more resilient, efficient and sustainable supply chains,” Goldfinch said.
The group’s wider activities include Yusen Logistics’ warehousing, distribution, freight forwarding and contract logistics, alongside NYK Bulk, NYK Energy and NYK Saga’s conventional shipping operations. Kadmos provides cross-border payroll and payment services for seafarers and their families. Asuka III, the group’s cruise ship, built in Germany and delivered in 2025, demonstrates its relationship with German shipbuilding.

Environmental efforts include the adoption of liquefied natural gas, bio-LNG and shore power, alongside investment in lower-emissions vessels, energy efficiency and next-generation fuels. Shore power allows vessels to use shoreside electricity rather than onboard generators while docked. NYK received Bremenports’ 2025 Green Focus Award for the cleanest fleet.
Goldfinch emphasizes that fuels, infrastructure, regulation and supply-chain integration must advance together to support lower-emissions shipping on a commercial scale. Progress across these areas would help NYK deliver sustainable transport while maintaining the operational reliability customers depend on.
“NYK’s role is to help customers balance sustainability with operational excellence, supporting the transition while continuing to connect economies, industries and communities,” he said.
