Tokai University European Center: Bridging Cultures through Education and Exchange

Tokai University

Founded in 1942 by Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, Tokai University was established with a mission to develop human resources equipped with a broad perspective and a flexible, creative education.

The university’s educational philosophy integrates both the humanities and natural sciences within a historical, national, and global framework. This approach remains central to the institution today, fostering comprehensive educational experiences.

Founder’s Vision

Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, the founder of Tokai University (1901-1991), was inspired by the ideas of Kanzo Uchimura and influenced by Denmark’s ambitious educational ideals, particularly those of N.F.S. Grundtvig and Enrico Dalgas.

His visit to Denmark and Danish folk high schools in the 1930s profoundly impacted his vision, leading him to dedicate his life to building a harmonious and civilized society through education.

The University’s Mission and Reach

Tokai University, as a prominent educational and research institution with campuses across Japan, is a leader in educational innovation, research, and international exchange. The university offers many unique and interdisciplinary programs, ranging from aerospace, optical and imaging engineering to agriculture, medicine and health, oceanography, liberal arts, social sciences and Nordic studies. It opened a “Drone Academy” in August 2023, ahead of other universities in Japan, in line with the pioneering spirit that characterizes the organization’s mindset. In addition, Tokai University actively engages in societal contributions by sharing the fruits of its research and educational innovations. The university boasts 23 faculties and 62 departments across seven campuses in Sapporo, Isehara (Kanagawa), Shounan (Kanagawa), Shibuya (Tokyo), Shinagawa (Tokyo), Aso/Kumamoto, and Shimizu (Shizuoka). The total university student population is 28,555, out of which 1,774 are international students.

In addition, the Tokai organization also oversees numerous affiliated schools, university hospitals and research facilities.

Tokai University European Center

Established in 1970, the Tokai University European Center (TUEC) acts as the university’s representative organization in Europe, collaborating closely with Danish authorities and partner institutions.

TUEC engages in academic-related events, cross-sector programs, seminars, and more, under the current leadership of directors Professor Manami Hori (head of research) and Jakob Skyt Jensen (head of administration).

Establishing strong connections

TUEC fosters mutual academic and cultural exchange between Europe and Japan. By establishing strong connections across Europe, especially Denmark and other Nordic Countries, it facilitates research activities, academic observations, and studies for visiting researchers and students.

TUEC stands as the European hub for Tokai University’s international endeavours, promoting independent private diplomacy through academia, culture, and sports.

In both Denmark and Japan, human resource development through high-quality education and promotion of innovative research are believed to lead to the creation of a better future world.  We look forward to our ongoing work in Denmark, fortifying the bond between our two nations.
