Singapore – a key hub in ASEAN

Bridges spoke with Kozo To, President of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Singapore

Bridges: What are JCCI Singapore’s initiatives towards promoting trade and investments between Singapore and Japan in the fields of digitalization, innovation and sustainability?

To: JCCI Singapore has been holding webinars on cutting-edge technology in these fields. Singapore government agencies such as Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), Economic Development Board (EDB) and government-linked organizations such as Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC) and SIMTech have also been actively providing information on Singapore’s latest developments and trends in these fields, as well as possible areas of collaboration. Before COVID-19, JCCI Singapore planned and organized many visits to these institutions, as well as leading companies, but we have pivoted to focus on webinars during this period to minimize in-person interaction and prevent the spread of the virus. One of JCCI Singapore’s key roles is to create new opportunities and networks for companies. The webinars have been a valuable platform to connect Japanese companies and Singapore government-linked organizations, promoting fruitful exchanges.

Can you share some success stories and examples of recent investments or partnerships between Japan and Singapore?

While the worldwide pandemic has led to some Japanese companies closing their offices here, we continue to see strong interest from companies in wide-ranging sectors to expand their operations to Singapore when the COVID situation improves, in order to actively tap on Singapore’s business ecosystem.

What are the growing trends and opportunities that continue to make Singapore a leading investment destination in the region?

ASEAN is a very important partner for Japan, and Japan-ASEAN trade and investment relations have grown from strength to strength over the years. ASEAN is poised to see continued robust population and economic growth, making it a major consumer market of interest to many Japanese companies. As a key hub in ASEAN, Singapore is an important gateway to the region.
