Road to Gold: Indonesia’s Strategy towards its Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision

Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia by economy, geography, and population, has set an ambitious goal for 2045. In two decades, the nation will mark a millennium of independence and aims to become a highly advanced, industrial, and technologically proficient country by then. To reach this goal, Indonesia is strengthening its bilateral relations with its neighbors, particularly Japan. Japan has long been a key partner in Indonesia’s industrialization, infrastructure development, and energy transition, with both nations committed to mutually benefiting from each other’s capabilities and expertise.

In this conversation with Bridges Magazine, BAPPENAS Vice Minister Febrian Ruddyard discusses Indonesia’s long-term economic vision, the role of Japan in advancing sustainability and digital transformation, and key areas of future cooperation. Additionally, he touches on his excitement for the Osaka Expo as a platform to showcase Indonesia’s achievements.

Bridges: Indonesia and Japan have enjoyed strong diplomatic and economic ties for decades. How would you describe the current state of this partnership?

Ruddyard: Indonesia and Japan have a long history of collaboration, and this partnership has only strengthened over the years. In 2023, we elevated our relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which reflects our commitment to deeper economic and strategic cooperation. Japan has played a crucial role in Indonesia’s industrialization, technology transfer, and human capital development. This partnership continues to evolve, particularly in key areas such as sustainability, energy transition, and digital transformation.

Indonesia aims to become a high-income country by 2045. What role does Japan play in achieving this vision?

Our Golden Indonesia 2045 vision is built on sustainable economic growth, innovation, and industrial competitiveness. Japan remains one of our key partners in infrastructure development, clean energy, and smart city projects. We are advancing energy transition, industrial down streaming, circular economy, and digital transformation to strengthen Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global economy. Japan’s expertise and investments in these areas contribute significantly to our long-term goals.

Sustainability has become a major focus for both Indonesia and Japan. What collaborative efforts are currently underway?

Indonesia is committed to reducing emissions and promoting renewable energy, and Japan is a vital partner in these efforts. Japan’s support for Indonesia’s carbon market and energy transition is an essential step toward achieving a zero-emission future. We are working together on geothermal energy projects, green financing, and carbon credit initiatives to ensure a sustainable and resilient economy.

Our Golden Indonesia 2045 vision is built on sustainable economic growth, innovation, and industrial competitiveness.

Beyond economics, are there new areas of cooperation that Indonesia and Japan are exploring?

Yes, our bilateral cooperation is expanding into defense, technology, and education. Our collaboration now extends beyond economic and trade sectors to include defense cooperation, technology transfer, and education. This includes joint research programs, skills development initiatives, and knowledge-sharing platforms that will prepare Indonesia’s workforce for future challenges.

How does Indonesia plan to showcase its economic progress and innovation at Expo 2025 Osaka?

Expo 2025 Osaka is a significant opportunity for Indonesia to highlight its leadership in sustainability, connectivity, and digital innovation. Our participation is not just about visibility—it’s about fostering long-term investment, trade, and diplomatic relations. We will utilize the Expo as a platform to showcase Indonesia’s strengths in green energy, smart cities, and digital transformation, reinforcing our position as a key economic player in the region.
