Indonesia’s energy transition is creating opportunities not only for new technologies, but also for established energy companies capable of adapting existing infrastructure to a lower-carbon future.

PT Energasindo Heksa Karya (EHK), an Indonesian private-sector natural-gas trader and distributor established in 1998, is one such company.

EHK supplies industrial and power-generation customers through an extensive natural-gas pipeline network and compressed natural gas (CNG) operations. Its customers include major industrial users, pulp and paper companies and power-generation businesses, while CNG extends its reach to commercial customers in West and Central Java.

Today the company is exploring how its existing gas-distribution capabilities can be applied to renewable gas produced from Indonesian organic waste.

“In September 2023, we signed an agreement with PT Moriuchi Indonesia to investigate supplying biogas or biomethane to Moriuchi’s manufacturing facility in Bandung,” says Agustinus Hendrayana, President Director of EHK.

“The initiative points toward a practical model for decarbonization: transforming locally available waste into useful energy for industry.”

EHK is controlled by PT Panji Raya Alamindo (PRA) in which Tokyo Gas Asia holds a 33% stake.

This Indonesia-Japan connection is now taking on a new dimension. The partnership brings important Japanese expertise and Tokyo Gas is contributing personnel, expertise and technologies across the energy sector, including gas and LNG, to the Indonesian business.

For Hendrayana the opportunity is clear: Indonesia’s abundant organic waste and growing energy demand can become part of the solution. By combining Indonesian infrastructure and market knowledge with Japanese technology and experience, EHK is exploring how to transform Indonesia’s resources, partnerships and innovation into a pathway toward a lower-carbon industrial future.
