In the 1940s, Countess Waldeck authored a book titled “Athénée Palace,” where she described the hotel as the most cosmopolitan scene in Europe, cementing its reputation as one of the continent’s most renowned hotels.
1914: In 1912, on the former site of the Gherasi Inn, a hotel designed by French architect Téophile Bradeau was built, becoming Bucharest’s first major landmark constructed with armoured concrete. Inaugurated in 1914, a pivotal moment for Athénée Palace.
1937: In 1937, architect Duiliu Marcu led a major renovation of the hotel, adopting a simplified Art Deco style to align with contemporary architectural trends while preserving its charm.
1965: To accommodate growing guest numbers, a new wing of Athénée Palace was added in 1965 facing Victoriei Avenue.
1977: On March 4, 1977, Athénée Palace withstood a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, while many nearby buildings were severely damaged. The hotel’s interior was refurbished in 1983.
