For more than two decades, Osaka Gas Australia has played a key role in one of the Indo-Pacific’s most important energy partnerships. Established in 2000 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Osaka Gas Co. Ltd., the company became the first Japanese utility firm to establish an office in Perth, Western Australia, laying the groundwork for a long-term relationship built on trust, investment and shared energy security goals.

Today, Osaka Gas sources more than 4 million tons of liquified natural gas annually from Australian projects including Gorgon, Ichthys and the North West Shelf, making Australia its largest LNG supplier. According to Motoyuki Hirabayashi, managing director of Osaka Gas Australia, ensuring stable LNG supply from the Gorgon and Ichthys projects remains the company’s top priority as natural gas continues to support the global energy transition.
“Australia’s geographical advantages, including its relatively short transport distance to Japan and the absence of choke points, have made it an exceptionally reliable partner,” Hirabayashi said. “But the relationship extends far beyond a simple seller-buyer arrangement. It has been built through more than 25 years of joint investment and mutual trust.”
As Japan and Australia deepen cooperation on decarbonization, Osaka Gas Australia is also advancing decarbonization initiatives such as biomethane and concentrated solar thermal (CST).

Through its partnership with Optimal Renewable Gas, the company is supporting the development of biomethane projects aimed at contributing to lower-carbon energy solutions in Australia. In parallel, through its investment in FPR Energy and with the support of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, Osaka Gas Australia is helping advance CST technology to provide decarbonization solutions for high-heat-demand industries such as mining and mineral refining sectors in Australia.
By combining Australia’s resource potential with the Daigas Group’s technological expertise and market reach, Osaka Gas Australia aims to help advance a realistic, commercially viable and secure pathway toward a lower-carbon future for both nations.
