Over six decades, Singapore and Japan have built one of Asia’s most resilient and forward-looking partnerships, anchored in trust, strengthened by economic integration and increasingly shaped by innovation and regional connectivity.
What began as a bilateral relationship has matured into a strategic platform with regional and global reach. Today, Singapore serves not only as a gateway for Japanese companies into Southeast Asia, but as a high-trust base for managing complex, multimarket operations across the Asia-Pacific region — an evolution driven by both countries’ shared commitment to openness, stability and long-term collaboration.
This transformation is reflected in how businesses now operate. As Kok Ping Soon, CEO of the Singapore Business Federation, noted, companies are moving beyond traditional models toward “a proactive regionalization strategy,” positioning Singapore as a command center for navigating fragmented markets and global uncertainty.

At the same time, the relationship is being reshaped by innovation. From digitalization and artificial intelligence to green technology and advanced manufacturing, both countries are aligning their strengths to accelerate real-world applications and regional scale.
For Junji Kurokawa, managing director of the Japan External Trade Organization Singapore, the significance of the milestone lies in what comes next.
“SJ60 (the 60th anniversary of Japan-Singapore relations) is more than a symbolic anniversary — it represents six decades of trust, stability and shared ambition in Japan- Singapore relations,” he said, pointing to Singapore’s role as a natural launchpad for Japanese companies seeking to connect with talent, capital and partners while expanding across the region.

This momentum is underpinned by a shared strategic outlook. Both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order, open trade and regional cooperation — principles that have enabled the partnership to remain durable amid shifting geopolitical conditions.
As Ambassador Ong Eng Chuan of Singapore noted, “Our six decades of partnership provide firm foundations for navigating this changed world.”
The recent elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership signals a clear intent to deepen collaboration across digitalization, energy transition and emerging technologies.

Beyond economics, the relationship continues to be driven by people-to- people exchanges. With record levels of travel, deep cultural engagement and sustained educational collaboration, both sides are investing in long-term connectivity that extends beyond policy and into society. These exchanges, built over decades, continue to reinforce the trust that underpins the partnership and enable new forms of cooperation to emerge.
As Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Ishikawa emphasized, SJ60 is “a truly historic milestone” that reflects “our shared commitment to building a brighter future together, not only for the two countries, but also for the rest of the world.”
Looking ahead, the emphasis is clear: Move beyond cooperation toward “co-creation” — translating decades of trust into tangible outcomes across business, innovation and regional development. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, Singapore and Japan are not simply marking 60 years of relations — they are setting the foundation for the next phase of partnership.
