Its pristine white façade, red roofline, and perfectly aligned windows make a striking first impression, fitting for such a prominent location just steps from the opera and along the historic Ringstrasse.
Inspired by the butterfly species for which it is named – a symbol of transformation, beauty and graceful journeys – the hotel aims to offer stays that leave guests subtly changed. Inside, the palais’ original grandeur remains. High ceilings, hardwood floors and glittering chandeliers are thoughtfully paired with sleek marble and curated artworks that adorn the walls and common spaces.
During our arrival orientation, a guest relations officer shared the building’s layered history: once a local bank, later a hotel under a different name, and fully renovated just two years ago. The owners chose not to erase its past but to refine it — preserving period details, restoring the cast-iron elevator and incorporating nearly 160 tons of marble across five varieties of stone used throughout the hotel.
With only 62 rooms and suites, The Amauris Vienna maintains an intentionally intimate scale, allowing for warm, attentive service at every turn. From the moment we checked in, that sense of thoughtful hospitality shaped our stay.

As we walked down the quiet corridor to our Maisonette Suite, the tall marble doors opened like a private vault, revealing a calm, welcoming space. A velvet sofa sat on the lower level, the large bed was dressed in Italian linens, and the marble bathroom featured heated floors and Acqua di Parma amenities.
Every room at The Amauris Vienna includes a curated mini-gallery: books, a small piece of Viennese art, a nature-inspired object, a classic board game, and a distinctive design piece. These thoughtful touches root each space in the city’s artistic spirit and add character to the hotel’s modern aesthetic.

At night, moonlight drifted through the skylight carved into the slanted roof, casting a soft glow across the suite. Upstairs, an airy living area awaited, complete with a dining table, minibar, coffee machine, and a second bathroom. It became the perfect hideaway for quiet dinners, long conversations, and unwinding after full days of exploring the city. From our top-floor vantage point, sweeping views of Vienna’s rooftops offered a constant reminder of the city’s layered beauty.
Throughout the property, design choices reflect a seamless dialogue between old and new. Contemporary furnishings sit comfortably alongside historic stucco, while curated lighting and warm textures complement the cool elegance of marble.
The hotel also became our ideal base for discovering the city on foot. Each morning, my wife and I strolled toward the opera house, continued down the grand shopping street, and wandered into historic churches and side-street cafés. And every evening, stepping back through the hotel’s doors felt like returning to a quiet, welcoming sanctuary.

One of the great joys of staying at The Amauris Vienna was waking up each day knowing breakfast awaited. It became an essential part of our routine, a gentle, elegant ritual that set the tone for everything that followed.
Served in a bright, inviting dining room, breakfast offered a composition of flavors and textures: pastries still warm from the oven, delicate breads, vibrant fruits, creamy yogurt, and savory dishes shaped by a confident, creative touch. Each morning, we discovered something new, a different pairing, a different bite, a different way of beginning the day.

The Spa: Wellness Beneath the Skylight
After full days spent wandering the city, the spa at The Amauris Vienna became our retreat. Tucked beneath a glass roof in the courtyard, it is bathed in soft natural light and feels worlds away from the city outside. We moved slowly between the steam room and Finnish sauna, letting the heat dissolve the day’s tension. The showers, with their rain and mist settings, added small moments of quiet pleasure, followed by the comforting warmth of thick, plush towels.
The relaxation pool, illuminated in gentle green tones beneath the skylight, became our favorite place to float and pause, watching reflections shift across the ceiling. Between dips, we rested on the loungers, wrapped in calm as the soft hum of the water jets filled the space.
A dedicated treatment room offers massages and facials, and the fitness area remains open around the clock. The spa is exclusively for hotel guests, ensuring a peaceful and restorative atmosphere throughout.
