Strengthening Cebu-Japan Economic Ties

An Interview with Joy Lorena A. Segismar, Executive Director, Cebu Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Inc.

How does CIDCC work with Japanese entities to promote investment and economic development in Cebu? The CIDCC will coalesce with interested Japanese entities and explore the ff:

a. Entertain trade and investment missions interested in Cebu

b. Establish formal agreements and partnerships with Japanese trade and investment organizations, such as the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Japanese Chambers of Commerce. These agreements facilitate mutual understanding and create a framework for cooperation in various sectors.

c  Organize and participate in investment forums, trade missions, and business matching events in Japan and Cebu. These events provide platforms for Japanese investors to explore opportunities, network with local businesses, and gain insights into Cebu’s investment climate.

d. Offer tailored services to Japanese investors, including market research, site selection assistance, and facilitation of regulatory processes. By providing comprehensive support, CIDCC ensures that Japanese entities can navigate the local business environment smoothly and efficiently.

e. Identify and promote specific sectors in Cebu that align with Japanese investment interests, such as manufacturing, information technology, tourism,  renewable energy, creative entertainment. Highlighting these sectors attract targeted investments and fosters sector-specific growth.

f. Facilitate cultural and economic exchange programs to strengthen ties between Cebu and Japan. These programs include delegations, study tours and knowledge-sharing initiatives that enhance mutual understanding and collaboration.

g. Provide support to Japanese investors through aftercare services, ensuring that their business operations in Cebu are sustainable and successful. This includes assistance with expansion plans, resolving operational challenges, and connecting investors with local partners.

What are CCCI’s future aspirations for collaboration with Japan in this regard?

More business opportunities especially in the game development, animation and other sectors in the creative industry  such as but it not limited to  capacity building and capacity enhancement, immersion of learners opportunities in animation studios in Japan, technical and knowledge experts for content creators and animators in the Visayas, access to financial institutions as venture capitalist and access to market for the Cebuano animators and game developers.

Could you provide examples of success stories or partnerships with Japanese entities?

The Cebu delegation to the CONTENT TOKYO  in June 2022 paved the way for direct relationship building between those in the industry in Japan and Cebu. More recent Information from DTI and EPZA will show the current companies in Cebu which are currently working with Japanese entities in the field of IT and manufacturing. 

Within the CCCI membership are firms engaged as IT developers and bespoke software solutions.  There are other great success stories yet to be documented, updated and shared.
