From heritage to experimentation, Viúva Lamego continues to redefine the possibilities of Portuguese tilemaking, bringing together craftsmanship, technology and contemporary creativity.
Since 1849, Viúva Lamego has been part of the history of Portuguese ceramics. Founded in Lisbon by António da Costa Lamego, the factory emerged at a time of growing demand for ceramics and tiles, partly driven by the Brazilian market. What began as a pottery workshop would evolve into one of Portugal’s most recognised names in tilemaking.

Following the founder’s death, in 1876, his widow assumed the management of the factory, which subsequently adopted the name Fábrica de Cerâmica Viúva Lamego. In its early years, production focused mainly on utilitarian red earthenware, white earthenware tiles and faience. By the beginning of the 20th century, however, the tile had become its defining product.
From early on, Viúva Lamego established a close relationship with the artistic community, opening its doors to artists and providing dedicated studios — known as casulos — where ideas could be developed directly within the factory. This spirit of collaboration remains at the heart of the company today.

A living heritage
For Viúva Lamego, preserving its heritage does not mean standing still. One of its greatest responsibilities is to ensure that generations of accumulated knowledge and craftsmanship are passed on, while continuously finding new ways to reinterpret them.
The company’s commitment to artistic collaboration has evolved into an ongoing programme of residencies and projects with artists, architects and designers from different generations, disciplines and geographies. In recent years, Viúva Lamego has worked with creators from countries including Mexico, Brazil, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Croatia, Japan and South Korea.
These collaborations create a continuous exchange between creative vision and
technical expertise. Authors work side by side with the factory’s artisans, exploring
new possibilities in format, colour, finishes and technical solutions.
It is this dialogue between tradition and experimentation that allows Viúva Lamego to remain faithful to its identity while constantly evolving.

“It is not a tile. It is Viúva Lamego.”
Craftsmanship meets innovation
Innovation at Viúva Lamego is rooted in a deep understanding of ceramic processes. While investing in research, development and new production techniques, the company remains strongly committed to artisanal methods that give each piece its distinctive character.

Its technical and R&D teams work continuously on the development of new products, techniques and solutions. At the same time, the highly bespoke nature of the business demands flexibility and technical expertise, with projects ranging from public and private art to large-scale architectural interventions, façades and interiors.
Working with leading names in art, design and architecture further strengthens this process, creating a virtuous cycle of knowledge-sharing, experimentation and innovation.
A factory open to the world
Viúva Lamego’s culture has always been one of openness and collaboration. Its factory remains a place where artisans, designers, architects and artists can come together to exchange ideas and develop new possibilities.
This collaborative approach has contributed to the company’s international growth. Today, Viúva Lamego is present in more than 30 countries, with projects ranging from catalogue collections to highly customised commissions.
Its relationships with architects, designers and artists have also created a powerful network of creative connections, with many collaborators introducing the brand to new practices, projects and creative communities around the world.
From its historic roots in Portuguese ceramics to its collaborations with contemporary creators around the world, Viúva Lamego continues to reinvent the azulejo — keeping a unique part of Portuguese cultural heritage alive, relevant and in constant evolution.

After 177 years, Viúva Lamego continues to look ahead.

The company’s ambition is to build sustainable growth while ensuring that its knowledge, craftsmanship and distinctive identity remain relevant for future generations.

“I believe the foundations are now in place for sustainable growth that will ensure our legacy is carried forward to the next generation.”
The future of Viúva Lamego lies precisely in this balance: preserving what makes it unique while continuously exploring what comes next.
