Architect Vinu Daniel, a renowned climate-responsive architect and TED2023 speaker, took the stage at the PropertyGuru Asia Real Estate Summit to discuss the future of sustainable architecture. With a passion for using unconventional materials like mud bricks and debris, Daniel shared his vision for building climate-responsive, eco-friendly structures that challenge traditional construction methods.
In a time when greenwashing is prevalent, Daniel’s approach offers real-life examples of genuine sustainability. “It is difficult to practice sustainability in architecture,” he remarked, “but today it’s even harder to identify what truly qualifies as sustainable.” Drawing attention to the vast energy savings of mud brick buildings, Daniel explained that the first mud brick structure he created used just 1/10th of the energy compared to conventional fired bricks or concrete.
His philosophy centers on the belief that sustainability must go beyond aesthetics—it must be climatologically, ecologically, and economically superior. “The architect’s role is no longer just a designer but a leader and teacher, pioneering research-oriented designs.”
Architect Daniel’s approach is not a boutique practice but a call for change in the industry—a movement toward building structures that are both sustainable and innovative.
