Tomini’s new vessel signals stronger ties with Japan

As Tomini Group marks its 75th anniversary, the Dubai-based shipowner is reaffirming its commitment to long-term partnerships, including its growing collaboration with Japan. The company describes this milestone year as a moment to reflect on four generations of steady expansion built on integrity, shared values and long-standing relationships.

Numair Shaikh, CEO of the Tomini Group

CEO Numair Shaikh said that while Tomini’s work with Japanese shipowners is relatively new, Japan’s maritime sector has long been a global benchmark for quality, reliability and professionalism. He added that the trust shown by Japanese partners through recent long-term charters and newbuilding projects supports the values that have shaped Tomini since its founding.

A major step forward in this relationship is the recent delivery of the Tomini Sakura, a 42,401-deadweight-ton “handymax” built by Oshima Shipbuilding. The vessel marks Tomini’s first project with Daido Kaiun.

“The delivery of Tomini Sakura, the 42,401-DWT handymax built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., marks more than a fleet addition — it is the beginning of a partnership built on mutual trust, and we are honored to begin this journey with Daido Kaiun. Our commitment is simple — we will care for this vessel as if she were our own and uphold the highest standards throughout the five-year period,” Shaikh said.

Tomini has also gained global recognition in recent years. The company received the Bulk Shipping Company of the Year award from The Maritime Standard in both 2024 and 2025, along with honors from the International Bulk Journal. Shaikh said these achievements reflect disciplined investment, strong operations and a clear commitment to sustainability, including digitalization and continuous fleet renewal.

“Our collaboration with Japanese owners is an important part of this future, and we look forward to strengthening it in the years ahead.”

Looking ahead, Tomini expects its work with Japanese shipowners to expand.

“As we expand our modern fleet and deepen our global partnerships, our commitment remains unchanged: to operate with integrity, deliver consistently and build relationships that endure. Our collaboration with Japanese owners is an important part of this future, and we look forward to strengthening it in the years ahead,” he said.
