Under Managing Director Cash Ishikawa, who took the helm in May 2020, the company is shifting its focus from traditional sectors to key areas such as energy transition, real estate and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had to rethink our core businesses,\u201d Ishikawa shared, noting the shift from traditional energy investments, such as coal, toward sustainable solutions. \u201cAs global concerns over climate change intensify, it\u2019s become clear we must evolve. This transformation is vital to our long-term viability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key component of Sumitomo\u2019s future growth is hydrogen energy. Its hydrogen ecosystem project in Gladstone, Queensland, aims to harness solar power to produce hydrogen for use in the manufacture of \u201cgreen aluminum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAustralia\u2019s natural resources and commitment to sustainability make it ideal for large-scale hydrogen projects,\u201d Ishikawa said. This initiative supports Sumitomo\u2019s sustainability goals and Australia\u2019s push toward net-zero emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sumitomo has also entered into a real estate partnership forming a 50\/50 joint venture with Mirvac Ltd. to develop the Highforest Project, a luxury residential development in Sydney\u2019s West Pennant Hills. \u201cWe are leveraging Japan\u2019s industry strengths to capitalize on Australia\u2019s growing market,\u201d Ishikawa noted. \u201cThe country\u2019s projected population growth makes this an attractive investment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
