Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) is the longest-serving, independent business association in Singapore and in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bridges<\/strong>: With ASEAN Day being celebrated today (August 8), what future role do you expect Singapore to play in the region?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mills:<\/strong> Singapore was one of the originators of ASEAN and always seeks to play a positive role in the region. The ASEAN region is a key component of Singapore\u2019s economic present and future. Singapore always seeks to be relevant and useful both in its own best interests and to benefit the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Japanese investment continues to strengthen the Singapore economy, where do you see the partnership between Singapore and Japan heading?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The role of Japanese investment in the Singapore economy has been a constant for nearly 60 years. Such investment is not only mutually beneficial economically but it has served to deepen people to people links. So much so, that Japan is one of Singaporeans\u2019 most favorite countries to visit and Japanese food and culture are much admired and enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ASEAN region is a key component of Singapore\u2019s economic present and future. What plans do you have to further develop the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce in 2023\/2024?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Chamber is 186 years young in 2023. It would not have survived this long without being able to reinvent itself time and time again to stay relevant and useful. We will continue this approach in the years ahead to maintain the Chamber\u2019s credibility, responsible independence and relevance to help businesses and Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singapore celebrates its National Day tomorrow (August 9). What are some of your best moments living and working in Singapore?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

National Day is always special because it reminds us Singaporeans of the values on which our republic is built and which continue to sustain it: multiculturalism, equality and justice for all, openness and connectivity to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year is an extra special year because on 16 September we will commemorate the 100th<\/sup> birth anniversary of the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. He was not only our founding Prime Minister but the man who initiated and developed Japan\u2019s relationship with the Republic of Singapore. Mr. Lee was an extraordinary leader whose commitment to Singapore, its people, its economy and its security was complete and who remains an inspiration to so many of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have many best moments living and working in Singapore. The most important one is my family which is a continual source of inspiration and support. A close second are the many relationships I have forged with so many diverse people in business, government and academia just by doing my job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
