Turkey is a unique NATO ally, sitting on the strategic linchpin of Europe, Asia, and Africa, having historic and economic ties both with Russia and Ukraine. Recognizing further rising its importance, Japan’s Foreign Minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa visited Turkey in last March, just after three weeks from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, and held a in depth discussion with his counterpart, Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
Our bilateral cooperation has extended into various fields not only business and economic, but also cultural and academic. On trade and investment, for example, if the ongoing negotiation for Japan-Turkey Economic Partnership Agreement （EPA） is concluded, it will bring a broader and more stable business environment for both countries, thereby inducing more investment from Japan to Turkey. In science, Turkey-Japan Science and Technology University (TJU) in Istanbul is a case in point. The two countries are working hard to establish and make it a hub for academic and research excellence, aiming to realize its opening in 2023.

Looking ahead, the two countries are now contemplating various ways to further strengthen our relationship, taking the opportunity of commemorating the 100th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between our two countries in the year 2024.
