Bridges: What role does the IJA play in strengthening Ireland – Japan Relations?

Hegarty: The Ireland Japan Association seeks to improve understanding and relationships between Ireland and Japan. We work to encourage better connections in economic, cultural, social and educational areas.

With this year’s 65th anniversary, what does the future hold for bilateral ties between the two countries?

60 years is a meaningful milestone in Japanese culture. 5 years ago, we celebrated 60 years of formal bilateral ties between Ireland and Japan. These ties have strengthened over the decades, and I am optimistic about how the future looks.

How important was the recent government meeting in bringing both countries closer together?

The meetings in Japan have reinforced the stature of the important ties between the two countries. It is remarkable that we can have these connections at the highest level and cooperate on matters of global significance.

What does 2022/2023 hold for the IJA?

With the cooperation of our members, we adjusted to the restrictions of the last 2 years and are now emerging as a stronger association. We are looking forward to events where we can interact with each other and support each other even more.
